Flavour Conference 2010 – Opening Video

This video element was created to open the 2010 Flavour Conference. The setting of this scene is visually based on the look of Dorothy’s Kansas home in the landmark film “The Wizard of Oz.” Soon after the viewer becomes acquainted with the farmland setting, she is met by words that illustrate pressures women deal with in our world today. The pressures multiply as more and more words fly towards the camera faster and faster, and as the camera whips around to face the house, it leads the viewer toward a menacing tornado which symbolizes the culmination of all of these pressures.

As soon as this video element ended at the beginning of the Flavour Conference, an actor portraying a character similar to Dorothy was revealed live in the auditorium. She continued with a short monologue which transitioned into a group dance sequence.

This video was produced primarily in Adobe AfterEffects CS4, utilizing the Trapcode Particular plug-in. Voiceovers, sound effects, and music were added to the soundtrack of the video in Apple Final Cut Pro.

The 3D farmland field was generated with a large XZ box emitter using the Particular plug-in in AfterEffects. The particle was set to a seamless wheat field texture and populated with around 250,000 particles.

The tornado was rendered in a separate composition (aka comp) from the field in AfterEffects to help cut down on render times. It was generated with close to 1 million particles using the same AfterEffects plug-in Particular. The particles used for that were a variety of cloud-type images. The final rendered tornado comp was then animated in the 3D field comp.
