During all of our “Capturing Christmas” brainstorms, meetings, and dream-sessions there was always one word that kept coming up – warm. We wanted everything associated with “Capturing Christmas” to bring about the warm Christmas memories that you had as a kid and the nostalgia of Christmas we all remember. And, this warm nostalgic theme continued to be communicated through our stage design as well!

When creating a new stage design there are multiple things we consider during our brainstorm sessions. For our Christmas stage, specifically, we wanted to keep the same basic stage design we had and “Christmas-fy” it. We also needed something that would look good behind Ed on camera for campuses and TV.

The final design we ended up with was a mixture of mini winter wonderland tree forests (dormant trees from Allaso Ranch that we spray painted white and built basic stands for), large newspaper snowflakes (also called stars, poinsettias, or flower bows depending on who you ask), and a mixture of different size hanging mason jars to pull in our “Capturing Christmas” album art. All of the stage design elements were built in-house by volunteers using materials we already had on-hand such as newspaper and recycled foam-board.

All of these elements worked together to create a warm nostalgic Christmas feel for our stage that we transformed into multiple unique “looks” for our specific elements through the help of creative lighting. For our Christmas services, we preformed “O Come O Come Emanuel” from our Capturing Christmas Album. We wanted to give the song a fresh unique look so after playing around with a few ideas, we landed on the idea of multiple drum sets that could light up. To accomplish this, we created lights that could be mounted inside of each drum. This is a simple DIY project that created a unique look for the whole element.

To make these light fixtures we took a small piece of plywood and cut it into the shape of a 10” pentagon. We then drilled out 8 – 1”3/8 holes for the placement of the lamp sockets. We used pin type single circuit outdoor sockets. These sockets have pins that pierce the lamp cord when the cap is screwed down so there is no spicing or stripping of wire needed. We then inserted the lamp socket and daisy-chained the socket’s lamp cord. We gaffed the back of the connectors to stabilize them before installing the 100w soft white bulbs and the power connector on the end of the lamp cord.

In order to mount the finished fixtures in the kick drums, we ran tie line around the drums and attached it to holes on the outer edge of the fixture. To mount the fixtures to the snare drums we placed double sided adhesive to the back of each lamp socket and secured it to the bottom head of the snare. The lamp cord ran out of the drums under the rim. White drum heads were used for the front/top heads. The bottom/back heads were lined with black wrap on the inside. This eliminated any bleed from the fixture.

These fixtures did produce a lot of heat however, for the length of our element the heat was not an issue. All in all these simple DIY light fixtures added a unique vibe and visual interest to our “O Come O Come Emmanuel” element that we were able to use at all of our campuses. Videos are a powerful tool that have the ability to communicate messages, capture hearts, and convey ideas. However, a poorly made video can be distracting and can potentially de-rail an experience! But, have no fear, our video team has put together a list of 5 quick tips that can help take your videos to the next level!

1. Invest in a good shotgun microphone.

A good shotgun mic can be versatile and cover multiple people.  It’s especially necessary if currently all of your audio comes from the built in microphone on the camera, which rarely sounds good.  If you want to really take the next step, you can run a lav microphone in addition to a shotgun mic so you have two sources of audio.  That way, you can pick which one sounds best given the environment and have a backup to work with in case of catastrophe.

2. Use motion blur on your motion graphics

One thing you will notice immediately on most beginner motion graphic pieces is the absence of motion blur.  Whether using After Effects or Apple Motion, nine times out of ten you’ll want to turn on motion blur.  It’s a small detail, and it makes projects take longer to render, but it makes everything look much better.

3. Communicate during a shoot.

No matter the size of the shoot, you have to talk to the talent and crew and let them know who is in charge and that you care about not wasting time.  Whether it’s the main talent, the extras or even the crew, people would rather be told to wait, than wait around to be told.  Sometimes a shoot can be boring and have down time as you set up your next shot, so don’t be afraid to tell people, “ok, everybody, we are going to take a 30 second break as we change lenses,” or “Let’s take a 5 minute break as we set up the next shot.”  People will appreciate you for that and trust that you know what you are doing.

4. Camera stabilization

Especially if you are shooting on a DSLR, while you are shooting, you might think you are being steady, but once you put that video on a big screen, those tiny shakes get magnified.  There are several things you can buy (or make) to help stabilize your shot, yet still give you a handheld feel.
